ARCHITECT // Henry H. Gutterson

The career of San Francisco architect Henry Gutterson spans the first half of the 20th Century. Gutterson graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of California Berkeley, he attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts but was also influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, becoming one of the acknowledged practitioners of the early Bay Area Style. Gutterson taught briefly at UC Berkeley while taking on independent commissions in San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland. He was active in civic planning, was a member of the Berkeley Planning Commission and co-founder and president of the Berkeley Planning & Housing Association. Gutterson’s longest commission (1912-1952) was that of Supervising Architect in nearby St. Francis Wood. As Supervising Architect, he was responsible for approving all architectural plans submitted by residents wishing to build there. During his tenure Gutterson personally designed dozens of St. Francis Wood and other area homes, including 126 Miraloma Drive, this 6,762 square foot mansion. That same year, 1928, he also designed the Ardenwood Christian Science retirement home, in a dramatic French chateau style. This iconic building remains a cornerstone of the area and it can be seen from the windows of 126 Miraloma Drive.
